  E. Flagstaff - From The Holiday Inn  MP 342

After arrival on the previous evening from a great trip on Amtrak #3, I awoke
to this view from room #522.  It's a good thing, because the rental car company which had taken my reservation for a small SUV six weeks earlier had called
to let me know that my car was not in yet.  All I could think of was that Seinfeld episode!  I watched the morning parade until about 10AM, when my car was
ready, and the rental company picked me up.
The first shot is a westbound Z train, and the second, an eastbound intermodal.
Both were taken with my low end digital camera.

Armed with a Ford Explorer (not quite a small SUV), I drove to my first trackside location.
The Presidential Elections were less than a month away, so my mind was full of thoughts
of how this trip could be ruined if I wasn't allowed to take photos and video from spots
that weren't exactly public property.  This was a spot that I enjoyed spending a lot of time
at during my 1996 visit.  The huge Purina Mill is seen looking to the west.  Sure enough,
after an eastbound, and then this westbound, the gentleman operating the tractor drove it
up to me and kindly told me I had to leave.  Good news was I wasn't arrested, and there
wasn't a squad of security folks to escort me away.  Bad news was that I was booted from
the first spot I picked.  Could this be an omen of things to come?

Cosnino  MP 333

Figuring a public grade crossing was safe, I pulled
into the dirt "lot" on the east side of Cosnino Road.
The first train featured over 12,000 tons and DPU's.
Unfortunately this train also marked my discovery of
an intermittent problem with my video camera, which
ended up costing the loss of over a dozen trains
during the trip.  Good thing BNSF runs lots of them!

With mid-day light allowing shots
of trains from both directions, I was
content.  This train reminded me
of the potential drawback of meets,
as it ended up blocking the view of
a westbound moments later.

Even off in the distance, the sound of the approaching westbound
climbing toward me was noticeably odd.  The explanation was
a spiffy NS SD60M, NS GP38-2, and SF GP60 lashup!  The
leading NS #6778 was an ex-Conrail, meaning I had likely seen
it somewhere in the Northeast in past years.  It is also marketed
by Atlas in N-Scale!

The afternoon light was now
poor for eastbounds, but this
neat mix of EMD's was worth
a going away shot.

The growth of the stack train
represents the biggest reason
for more trains than ever on
the Seligman Sub.

A political statement turned
into one of public service on
this trailing DPU.

The late afternoon light was
prime for a shot of a train
going through one of the
classic ATSF signal bridges.
I moved about 100 yards
to the west for this.
