AMTRAK #4

Cosnino  MP 333

The following morning had me traveling east again.
I was planning on shooting in the area between
West Darling and East Darling.  However moments
before reaching Cosnino as I traveled east on Rte 40,
I heard Amtrak #4 departing Flagstaff.  I decided to
take the Cosnino exit for this shot.

Hot on the heels of Amtrak was this unknown eastbound.
What makes this a "keeper" was the lead engine.
With the exception of the recently added 5841-5843 as
warrantee protection units, it's the highest numbered
C44-9W on the BNSF roster.  I would actually end up
seeing the 5841 on the next day.

The morning light was horrible for westbounds.
Knowing they were coming, I tried some
different angles.  Not even realizing it until I
thoroughly examined my slides, I had caught
the #4723.  The engine used by Microsoft to
develop its Train Simulator software.

The westbounds kept coming &
I wanted an eastbound.  This
would have to do.  The DPU's
were facing the right direction!

A decent going away shot shows
this westbound train on track 2.
It is the second that will pass a
lower priority westbound stack
train.  All 3 trains showed within
25 minutes.

It was really time for a new spot.
I set up from the overpass overlooking
the signal bridges at West Darling.

The 3rd westbound after my arrival was a loaded
grain train sporting 3 mid train and 2 rear end DPU's.

I tried to contact the crew
of this train.  I wonder if he
really did take a picture of me.

With The Darling Cinder Pit in the background, the
Conductor of this westbound gives a friendly wave.
I spent about 1-1/2 hours 'fanning between here
and about a mile to the east, with most of my efforts
on video only.

The dual signal bridges controlling
the crossovers make an excellent
prop.  The fuel tank on the right
keeps everything thawed out
during the winter.
This location is close to 6200 feet
above sea level, but the train will
still climb more than 1000 feet
before reaching the Arizona Divide,
only 24 miles to the west.

Oh those shadows were moving quickly,
and I knew there was  another westbound
coming.  There it was in the distance, and
not moving too fast.  I think 2 minutes
earlier would've been perfect, but this is
what I got.  I ended up chasing this train
back to Cosnino, where most of it ended
up being blocked by an eastbound.
Overall a pretty good day.  However I will forever regret spending this day in the area
east of Flagstaff.  Keep going to find out why.
